Do you wake up, even after a good night’s sleep, and find that the loose skin above your eyes or bags below your eyes make you look tired? Do you look tired but feel awake?

If you answered “yes,” you are not alone. Eyelid (blepharoplasty) procedures are commonly performed to help restore a more energetic and youthful appearance around the eyes.

Eyelid (blepharoplasty) procedures are commonly performed to help restore a more energetic and youthful appearance around the eyes. While non-surgical treatments can provide temporary fixes, a masterfully performed blepharoplasty offers a permanent structural reset for the delicate eye area. Dr. Ronan leverages over two decades of clinical experience to meticulously refine the upper lids, lower lids, or both, ensuring that every incision is discreetly hidden within your natural anatomy. Our goal is to provide a refreshed and balanced silhouette that preserves the unique character of your eyes.

A Subtle Solution for Tired Eyes

What Is an Eyelid Lift?

Blepharoplasty, commonly known as an eyelid lift, is a precise surgical procedure designed to correct the signs of aging that manifest around the eyes. As we age, the eyelid skin loses its elasticity, and the underlying muscle weakens, leading to an accumulation of excess fat and sagging tissue. This can occur in the upper lids, lower lids, or both.

The upper eyelid lift procedure offered by Dr. Ronan involves removing the excess skin in the shape of a crescent. Next, any excess or bulging fat is removed, typically from the areas next to the nose. Fine sutures are used to close the incision. The scar blends into the fold above the eye and is very difficult to see.

A lower eyelid lift focuses on eliminating prominent bags and smoothing the transition between the eye and the midface. A discreet incision is made just below the lower lashes or on the inside of the lid. Fat is removed or redistributed to fill in hollow "tear troughs," supporting muscles are tightened, and any redundant, crepey skin is removed.

The lower lid procedure involves making an incision behind the eyelid or just below the eyelashes. Next, the fatty tissue is either removed or redistributed according to patient needs. The muscle overlying the lower lid is then redraped and tightened. Any excess skin of the lower lid is then carefully removed if necessary, and the incisions are closed so that the scar will be hidden. The overall effect includes the disappearance of lower-lid bags, smoothing of the lid-cheek junction, and a more youthful contour.

Other procedures are frequently combined with eyelid surgery to enhance results and can be discussed during your consultation. The most commonly associated procedures are browlifts and facelifts.

Comfort, Care, and Precision at Every Step

What Is the Eyelid Lift Procedure Like?

Your eyelid lift will be performed in Dr. Ronan’s surgery center located in Danville, California. The procedure is typically performed as an outpatient surgery and can take one to three hours, depending on whether you are treating the upper, lower, or both sets of lids.

For your comfort, Dr. Ronan offers several levels of anesthesia. Some patients prefer local anesthesia with sedation, which allows them to remain awake but fully relaxed and numb, while others choose general anesthesia. Once the anesthesia has taken effect, Dr. Ronan makes precise incisions along the natural contours of the eyelids to remove excess fat and skin. If you are undergoing a lower blepharoplasty, he may also redistribute fat to fill in hollow troughs before closing the incisions with fine, meticulously placed sutures.

Versatile Rejuvenation

What Conditions Does an Eyelid Lift Address?

Blepharoplasty surgery is a versatile procedure that can be tailored to address several common concerns:

  • Droopy Eyelids: Lifting the upper lids that have begun to sag or "hood" over the lashes.
  • Under-Eye Bags: Removing or repositioning the bulging excess fat in the lower lids.
  • Fine Lines and Wrinkles: Smoothing the crepey eyelid skin that makes applying makeup difficult.
  • Visual Obstruction: Correcting a heavy upper eyelid that hangs low enough to impair your vision.
  • Ptosis: Addressing the structural muscle weakness that causes one eye or both to appear partially closed.

See Better. Look Brighter.

What Are the Benefits of an Eyelid Lift?

For many patients, droopy eyelids are more than a cosmetic concern. When excess eyelid skin hangs over the pupil, it can create significant vision problems. Upper eyelid surgery removes this obstruction, often improving your peripheral vision and overall visual field.

By removing the "tired" look caused by bags and sagging tissue, blepharoplasty provides subtle but powerful results. Upper blepharoplasty results typically last many years, and lower eyelid surgery is a once-in-a-lifetime procedure for most patients. Dr. Ronan’s surgical technique ensures that any scarring is virtually invisible once the healing process is complete, making this one of the most discreet cosmetic procedures available.

Discover If Eyelid Surgery Is Right for You

Am I a Candidate for an Eyelid Lift?

Most blepharoplasty patients are 35 or older, though if droopy eyelids or puffy bags run in your family, you may decide to undergo surgery at a younger age. During your initial consultation, Dr. Ronan will review your medical history, specifically looking for thyroid problems, dry eyes, or circulatory disorders that could affect tear production.

Return to Your Routine Refreshed

Eyelid Lift Recovery

Immediately following the blepharoplasty procedure, you may experience some swelling, bruising, and minor discomfort. We recommend using cold compresses frequently during the first 48 hours to minimize these side effects.

You may experience blurred vision temporarily due to the lubricating eye drops or ointment applied during surgery. It is important to keep your head elevated for several days and avoid wearing contact lenses for about two weeks. Most patients find that they can return to work and public life within seven to ten days, as any remaining bruising can usually be concealed with sunglasses or light makeup.
