A person’s eyes are one of the first things we notice when we look at someone. They reveal our age, our emotions, our mood, our energy level (or lack of sleep!) and more. They eyes are an extremely sensitive and delicate area of the face, so while we want them to look their best, the thought of having surgery may make one squeamish and the array of non-surgical options can be overwhelming. Combining topical treatments (serums and creams) with procedures done at a plastic surgeon’s office can help achieve the best results. Here is a breakdown of the best non-surgical treatments for the eyes:

What to apply in the morning
AOX Eye Gel ( Skinceuticals®) – This breakthrough serum-in-a-gel contains a combination of antioxidants combination to help protect the delicate eye area from oxidative stress, while targeted actives revive under-eye skin and helps reduce the appearance of puffiness. Lightweight and energizing, you would apply this product gently to the undereyes, temples and eyelids after cleansing in the morning.

SPF Eye Defense ( Skinceuticals®) – Finally! A non-chemical sunscreen designed for the delicate skin around the eyes, combined with the benefit of a smoothing and skin tone enhancing primer. Love this product! It simplifies your morning routine by functioning as a 2-in-1 product and it won’t irritate sensitive eyes.

What to apply in the evening
There is no shortage of eye serums and creams on the market, but for best results, always use a medical-grade product for maximum effectiveness and purchase it at a doctor’s office to ensure purity and quality control. At Blackhawk Plastic Surgery, we love these two products:

A.G.E. Eye Complex ( Skinceuticals®) – The signs of intrinsic aging, caused by hormonal shifts and metabolic slowdown, are most evident in the delicate eye area. A.G.E. Eye Complex is a three-dimensional treatment that contains a unique combination of ingredients to improve the appearance of dark circles, wrinkles, and puffiness.

Regenica Revitalizing Eye Cream ( Regenica®) – A powerful combination of growth factor technology with advanced peptides, potent antioxidants, and superior moisturizing agents. Regenica® Revitalizing Eye Crème quickly erases the look of fine lines and wrinkles while reducing the appearance of puffiness and dark under eye circles.

What to get at a doctor’s office
Dysport®/Botox® is commonly used to treat and prevent “crow’s feet” (wrinkles around the eyes) and can give a “lifted” appearance to the eyebrow. This product is injected into the muscles around the outer part of the eye area to temporarily relax the muscles. It can take 5-14 days to see fewer lines when smiling, but stubborn creases in the skin can take longer to resolve. Results typically last 3-4 months and treatments need to be repeated to maintain results. Cost varies from $250-$500 per treatment. Patient loyalty programs such as Aspire Rewards (Dysport/Restylane) and Brilliant Distinctions (Botox/Juvederm) allow patients to earn points that turn into cost-saving coupons at the doctor’s office, so be sure to register with these programs before your treatment!

Dermal fillers such as Restylane® can be injected into the hollow area under the eye (tear trough area) to reduce the appearance of shadows and dark circles under the eyes. This is an extremely delicate and sensitive area so it is essential that the practitioner who performs this treatment, as with all injectables, is licensed, trained and experienced in treating this part of the face. Results are immediate and can last 6-12 months. Cost depends on the amount of filler used, but typically ranges from $600-$1200 per treatment.

Latisse® is a prescription treatment that helps the eyelashes to grow longer, thicker and more voluminous. The product is applied to the upper eyelid at bedtime just like you would apply eyeliner. Results take 2-4 months for noticeable results. Be prepared for friends and strangers alike to ask you what your secret is for beautiful, long lashes!
